The Daily Wick: Body Modification

I know i'm not alone in thinking this self-harm, mutilation thing is grossly fascinating...

The Daily Wick was a short-running series of creative design sprints in which I challenged myself to invent brands, branding materials, packaging, and more.

I recently watched a documentary on body modification. I knew people put hooks through their skin and suspended themselves in the air – but I did not know people voluntarily cut their penis in half. I know i'm not alone in thinking this self-harm, mutilation thing is grossly fascinating. I was also surprised that this seemingly dangerous surgery could be performed in a typical tattoo/piercing shop.

The documentary did a great job of playing up the spectacle. I think few people would voluntarily watch someone cut a hole in their own dick and then slide a piece of metal inside, but nobody told me that was coming! I am still not sure if the filmmakers were trying to promote the “subculture” or just genuinely interested in things that make people cringe. Either way, the film elicited a strong response from all who watched it so I still have to recommend it for the sake of trying something new. Just don't go out and cut your dick off.
